Shaking Your 360 Soon
|
Innumerable stars fill the vastness of space. A dismembered body drifts into view, a legless soldier floating through space followed by debris, wreckage, and other bodies. After some credits roll and the logo pops up, three ships warp into view, with the USS Patton at point, and proceed to join a space battle above a red planet. Within one of the ships, marines are racing towards a transport. Once the transport is away from the capital ship, it makes its way toward the red planet’s surface. Soldiers within the transport begin small talk about Matthew Kane (YOU!) before a commander comes in to outline the situation. The marines are headed to the planet to fight with the Strogg army. However, before they can safely reach the surface, they are struck by a missile, and the transport crashes into the planet. Kane slowly regains consciousness and finds himself in the wreckage of the transport. He is surrounded by marines and the Strogg in a massive battle. Armed with only a pistol, Kane’s adventure begins!
Such is the opening sequence to the latest installment of the Quake series, Quake 4. Already released for the PC, Quake 4 will be released for the XBOX 360 shortly after the console’s launch. But fear not! The pistol is not the only resource available to Kane by the greatest stretch of the imagination. Quake 4 offers an enormous amount of vehicles, weapons, and even fellow marines to aid you in the battle against mankind’s deadliest foe since the bubonic plague!
There are a total of nine different weapons in the game. As mentioned earlier, you start the game off with only a pistol, though more are obtainable throughout the game. After a short period in the game, Kane will acquire the Machine Gun, his default weapon. This gun has a high rate of fire, which is especially useful when surrounded by numerous enemies. It also features a zoom function to deal greater, more precise damage. Like the Machine Gun, the Hyper Blaster also has a high rate of fire, but is energy-based, more powerful, and lacks the zoom function. The deadliest high rate of fire weapon would have to be the Rail Gun, making it extremely powerful and deadly. The newest weapon is the Nail Gun. Similar in function to the Rail Gun, the Nail Gun is also extremely lethal. The Lightning Gun is a little different than the high rate of fire weapons. It fires a single beam that by itself does little damage. However, if Kane can keep the beam focused on an enemy, it will deal a stream of constant damage! The Shotgun is an up-close and personal weapon. It has limited range and ammo capacity, but at the appropriate range, it can deal a deadly amount of damage to an enemy unfortunate enough to be within its spread. No first-person shooter would be complete without the Rocket Launcher and the Grenade Launcher. Both of these weapons are best used when trying to spread the damage to a wider area. However, both guns’ projectiles take longer to connect and detonate than the other weapons. Therefore, anticipation of where the enemies will be when the projectiles detonate is crucial when aiming. A nice addition to the game is the interaction between the exploding projectiles and the environment. In multiplayer mode, grenades are affected by the jump pads in the level. This means the grenades can chase after fleeing enemies. The most powerful weapon in the game is the Dark Matter Gun. The DMG only holds one shot, but that shot is enough to obliterate any enemy it comes in contact with. The weakest weapon is the Gauntlet. The Gauntlet is a handheld buzz saw that Kane is always equipped with. Though it is very hard to kill any enemy with the Gauntlet, a great deal of satisfaction can be obtained if the kill is achieved.
Kane will also have more than one type of vehicle at his disposal. First off, the Marine Hovertank sports a turret with a cannon and a machine gun, which are both effective against ground and aerial enemies. Another vehicle is the Marine Walker, a large “mech” which not only has a machine gun like the Hovertank, but also a rocket launcher. Both vehicles feature regenerating armor and shields. The Strogg fire two types of missiles. The first “orange-streaked” missiles can be avoided. However, the “blue-streaked” missiles home in on the vehicles. Fortunately, the vehicles come with a missile lock warning installed, and they do have the ability to target and shoot down incoming missiles.
With up to eight players at a time, Quake 4 features a multiplayer system less focused on objective completion and more focused on marksmanship. Though the game does feature Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag, the rest is based on individual accomplishment. Unlike games like Battlefield 2, there are no rewards for playing a supporting role, or any intricate scoring systems for that matter. It is survival of the fittest! The pinnacle of this mindset is the Tourney mode. A system of brackets allows players to participate in one-on-one deathmatches until a supreme champion is determined. The players who are knocked out of the tournament can either observe the rest of the tournament or practice in an alternate arena with the rest of the “losers!” Another nice feature of the multiplayer system is the weapon statistic system. At the end of every match, the players can access a statistics tab to see the kills, deaths, and accuracy of each weapon used for every player.
The XBOX 360 version of Quake 4 will hardly vary from the PC version. Though the resolution is not as good nor is the framerate as fast on the XBOX 360, all of the content is practically identical. The XBOX 360 version will also sport an auto-aim feature that will slightly “slow” the crosshair as it goes across a hostile, and enlarge the crosshair to compensate for the loss of accuracy from the transition from a mouse to a thumbstick. As for multiplayer, the PC version supports 16 players as opposed to the XBOX 360’s 8 player XBOX Live multiplayer. Both version of Quake 4 will also be released with special editions, costing roughly ten dollars more. While the PC special edition will have every Quake game and expansion pack ever released all on one DVD, the XBOX 360 special edition will only contain a graphically enhanced version of Quake II, so the player can revisit how the whole Strogg war began.
Though the XBOX 360 version sounds like a step down from the PC version, only time will tell how this game will truly fair on the console. One thing is for sure, in that it will be a memorable addition to the Quake series. For those of you out there who are not familiar with the Quake series and are wary about purchasing the game with your brand new XBOX 360 system, MyGamer.com will be there with a full review when the game is released!
