Full Auto
Release date: 14 Feb 2006

Raw Horsepower + Awesome Firepower = Full Auto

It’s a race that demands both precision aim and breakneck speed. Tear up the track, figuratively and literally, with the fully loaded and armor laden cars of Full Auto. Due out in mid-February, Full Auto is poised to be the next “next-generation” game to compete for your hard earned cash. What’s left of it after the holidays, that is. “So what is the outlook on this crisp, fresh, new title” you might ask? Well here is a rundown of what it has to offer.

Features:

TOTAL Destruction - Unprecedented car and environmental damage make this the most destructive racing game ever. No pre-calculated or canned animations mean players will never see the same wreck twice!

Unique "Unwreck" feature - Delivers the racing genre's first real-time "second chance." Players have the ability to control time to rectify mistakes both big and small.

Distinct gameplay modes - Circuits, Point-to-Points, Down & Back, Rampage, and Lap Knockout available in Single Player, split-screen and on Xbox Live.

Collision, Jump and Death cameras - Unprecedented presentation-including the "One-Touch" replay-exposes each and every action-packed moment.

Enjoy intense combat and unlimited replayability - 21 vehicles, 8 distinct weapon types, 18 tracks, and over 80 events provide a next-gen experience unlike any other.

Xbox Live - Play against up to 8 players anywhere, anytime on Xbox Live. Get ranked and unlock achievements in-game and show your friends that you've got the skills.

What does all of that translate to? First of all, when they say “TOTAL Destruction” they mean it. If you take the time to stop and aim at every little thing, you will be hard pressed to find something you can not blow up. It is especially satisfying to shoot at highly explosive stuff (like gas stations or fuel tankers). As you can imagine, these items blow-up real good, and the resulting shockwave wreaks havoc on the surrounding environment.

Now, with such destructive power, you may find yourself getting a little trigger happy. Sure it’s great to bring a bridge crashing down on your opponents head, but what if your timing is off and said bridge comes tumbling down on you instead? Fortunately for you and your self-destructive tendencies, Full Auto has a nice “Unwreck” feature added to it. Essentially this allows you to rewind time and undo whatever mistake you made. Your ability to do this is limited, however, and when depleted you will have to blow more stuff up in order to refill you “Unwreck” time. Did I mention that there is a lot of blowing stuff up it this game?

To complement the racing side of the game, you have the ability to do power slides and catch air. Not only do these moves look cool, but they also serve as a means to fill up your “Boost” meter. Once full you can use this to send yourself hurtling down the race track at insane speeds (or hurtling into the nearest wall depending how careless you are). For the shooting side of things, you can independently aim you crosshair in one direction while you steer in another. You will also be given two different weapons to use such as a machine gun and rocket launcher, or a shot gun and land mines. The kinds of weapons available to you depend on your class of car (4 different classes in all).

The single-player portion of the game seems to offer a lot of variety over your typical racer. You have the standard Arcade mode and Career mode, but with some unique objectives encountered throughout. For example, in Career mode you will work you way through different series in order to unlock cars, tracks, weapons and more. Each series contains certain objectives that range from time trials and circuit races to more original things such as escorting other vehicles and trying to take out as many traffic cars as you can within a time limit. There are also several other variations like Pursuit, Underdog, Warlord, etc.

Although they had to ditch the “Unwreck” feature for xbox live matches, Full Auto looks to be equally enjoyable in a “blow your best friend to bits” sort of way. Eight players can battle it out at once in some standard and original multi-player modes. These modes include:

Down and Back – Race to the end of the course, tag up, and then race your way back.

Point-to-Point – Race one way from point A to point B.

Circuit – Do whatever it takes to cross the finish line first.

Lap Knock Out – Last placed car on each lap is eliminated instantly.

So far Full Auto is shaping up to be a great game. Poised to be somewhere between Twisted Metal and Project Gotham Racing it is certainly a unique offering. Throw in some mega-destructible environments and unique game modes, and how can you go wrong? I guess we will find out later this month.
