Jaws Unleashed
Release date: May 2006

Stay Out Of The Water

In 1975 a small time director named Steven Spielberg was having trouble shooting a movie titled Jaws. The premise detailed a shark that was ruthlessly killing the residents of a small beach town. The director was having a hard enough time shooting elaborate scenes with the shark, and then to make matters worse, later through production the oversized mechanical fish broke. Forcing the director to rely on the tension of the sharks few, yet animated, appearances to sustain the film. Jaws went on to claim critical and financial success and is also credited with jumpstarting the career of Steven Spielberg. Today, Majesco and Appaloosa Interactive try to capture that raw tension and ruthlessness in Jaws Unleashed.

In Jaws you play as the great white shark himself. Aggravated by the Coast Guard who are always on the lookout, annoyed by the private sectors drilling operations, and hounded by scientists that want you alive, you have no choice but to get them off your tail the only way you know how.

The gameplay is a mix of twenty action and stealth based missions. Some missions will require you to go topside and show your enemies your pearly whites, while others will have you dodging fisherman’s nets or the Coast Guards scout boats. Unleashed features two tandem meters that will be important for keeping the big nasty alive and swimming. The first revolves around the great white’s hunger, in which you must always be in search of food, such as small fish, other sharks or people. The second involves the health of the creature, which coincides with the first meter. So if you go after a fisherman’s boat to satisfy Jaws’ hunger you’ll get a health boost for every time you swallow a fisherman.

Kill sequences are satisfying, as you can target specific parts or limbs of your prey. When you dismember your fallen foe, his limbs will split off and float amassing a cloud of blood around them. You will also have the ability to launch yourself out of the water to bite off the limbs and craniums of your antagonists.

Unleashed will also feature scenes from the original movie, that can be played out from the sharks side of the adventure. Moreover, the game will have hidden items throughout the game world that will unlock concept art, movies, and creature bios. From the look of this game and Appaloosa’s previous experience (Echo the Dolphin), Jaws should be a fun and interesting title. If anything, Jaws Unleashed will be a departure from the “happy-go-lucky” dolphin that is trying to save the environment. As of now, Jaws Unleashed has been pushed back from its February debut to late May, so check back with MyGamer for updates in the near future.
