Ace Combat 5
Release date: 1 Feb 2005
Flying solo
Although the multiplayer in Ace Combat 4 was extremely bland, it was better than nothing - which is what's sitting on the tarmac. While lack of multiplayer is less than encouraging, the single player in Ace Combat 5 is largely similar to what we were treated to in 2001, just with more of everything. Campaign Mode's missions have almost doubled from eighteen to thirty and the roster of twenty-one aircraft has more than doubled to fifty and many planes have several versions with varying paint jobs…I just hope that an F-16 in four colors was counted as four planes.
The already impressive graphics have received serious attention; model detail has increased and we're in for real-time weather and dynamic lighting that changes as time passes in the game. The environments are quite striking and in some cases even trees have been completely rendered. It's all tied together with an hour worth of cut-scene-driven storyline.
New to the game play is Arcade mode, allowing players with an itchy trigger finger to get right into the action. You'll progress through a series of short and intense missions beginning with just a few moments on the clock and have to earn additional time by taking down enemy aircraft. Also new to game play are Wingman Commands issued with the digital buttons similarly to Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II for GameCube. With the push of a button you can direct orders to your entire squadron. With such impressive visuals and loads of new content, Ace Combat 5 is shaping up to perhaps become the best arcade flight simulator ever.
