the ds can play gba games right? do i have to buy some add-on to be able to play them?

nope. they have their own slot built right into the handheld.

The only problem is you can't do any sort of multiplayer, as there is no appropriate plug and the DS wireless won't work for it. Also, old Gameboy and Gameboy Color games won't work.
