The SNES was the leader of the 16 bit war. Turbo Graphics 16 failed and its maker, NEC turned its business towards producing chips and hardware, and Sega had blundered because they made too many alternative systems (several at the time) and could not support them all.

Sega was in line to release its Sega Saturn system to the masses while Nintendo was maxing out the power of the SNES. Low and behold Sony was entering the video game market with it's Playstation system. The Saturn had a dual processor that didn't really jive together that left 3D games below par with the Playstation. The Saturn was a very good 2D console, but the future was 3D, and the Playstation did a better job at it.

In the end the Sega Saturn came to an early demise thanks in part of the success of the Sony Playstation, and the arrival of Nintendos cartridge based platform, Nintendo 64.

There were other game consoles that made a slight splash in the market at this time but could not get a foothold of the market shares. The SNK NeoGeo had some decent games. The ones that failed miserably were 3DO, LaserInteractice, and the Atari Jaguar.
