The RPG genre is probably the closest digital game relative to books. They focus on stories, characters, epic struggles, etc., except minus the pages and plus a few buttons. And with the advent of eBooks being released for the DS, Wii, and PS3 draws gamers ever closer to the print aspect of story-telling. They have another appeal to the gaming crowd, as well: versus paying the typical $30-$50 for software, these initial (and most likely future) releases are free.

The first library available for downloading is courtesy of Darren Reid, author of the best-selling fantasy series the [i]Chronicles of Shadow[/i]. The library includes [i]The Genesis of the Shadow[/i], which is a prequel to [i]Lord of Darkness and Shadow[/i] released earlier this year, among other short stories, novels, and novellas, and have been optimized for use in each the consoles’ respective browsers. Reid commented, "I am delighted to share my free stories and allow next-gen console owners the chance to read them as well."

More eBooks are on their way, and are slated to be released through the end of this year and into 2007. Some of the mentioned titles include [i]Two Wizards: A Chronicles of the Shadow[/i] prequel, [i]Xevicom Forever[/i] (a graphic novel, which could be interesting if it is released for the DS), and a nameless special project.
