E3 2009 Predictions: Sony

The cool thing these days seems to be to make a prediction for what we’re going to see at E3.  Well, who am I to disagree?  Part two, we’ll look at the unlikely underdog, Sony.

Sony silently snuck up on Nintendo and has actually become the premiere first party game studio.  While Nintendo has been pushing Wii Fit and Wii Music, Sony has put out Resistance 2, Killzone 2 and LittleBigPlanet.  They’re going to feature some of their big first-party titles.

While MGS4, Resistance 1 and MotorStorm certainly moved units (over ten million copies sold between the three), Sony is still clamoring for a genuinely huge title like Halo 3 (nine million copies sold) or any of the first party games from Nintendo.  Expect them to keep trying to find such a title, with some new first party games getting announced at the show.

God of War III will probably be featured in some major capacity.  While it would seem to fall into the above “big game” credentials, keep in mind that God of War I on the PS2 capped at just over three million units sold, on a console owned by over one-hundred million people.  It’s a game that has a good rep, but Sony really wants a game that will move five or six million units.  God of War won’t be that game.

They will probably be very happy to brag about the MAG game.  MAG, if you’ll remember back to E3 2008, will feature 256 player multiplayer on both land and air.  Expect it to be awesome.

Sony is going to do something with the new PSP.  We’ll probably finally actually get all the details and a confirmed design.

We may see that new, sleeker, cheaper PS3 that everyone keeps talking about.

We’ll probably see some more bundles.  Sony loves to make up PS2 and PSP bundles.  They’ll probably make a big deal out of a newer, cheaper PS2 bundle and PSP bundles with newer, but not cheaper, games.

There will probably be some cool new feature for the PS3.  Maybe we’ll finally see downloadable PS2 games?  Or a greater lineup of PS1 games?

We’ll probably see some token effort to play up support for the PSP with hyping of Dissidia: Final Fantasy and Rock Band Unplugged.  We might see a new title revealed, but the PSP has been struggling of late and I can’t see too much more happening with it, especially with a possible new unit coming up.

Sony is the hardest to predict, really, because they always seem to pull out something new, borrowed or (Blaz)blue.  But I would bet we’re going to see a whole bunch of ‘splainin’ on why you shouldn’t even bother with the Xbox 360 versions of all those former PS3 exclusives like Tekken 6 and Final Fantasy XIII.

Last but not least, remember Heavy Rain?  Yeah, that game looked way cool back in 2006.  It still sticks out in my mind, though, and I’m seriously hoping we see some more of the Quantic Dream-made drama.

Sony will probably have some good stuff.  Last but not least, Microsoft.
