E3 2017 – Nintendo Summary

This is an important E3 for Nintendo as they are trying to create compelling software for their young Switch while still trying to maintain a steady stream of content for the 3DS family. Here is a quick breakdown of the things they talked about at E3 2017.

  • Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s first batches of DLC were announced. There will be a map tracker that tracks where you’ve been over the last couple hundred hours, new outfits, and super difficult shine trials. There is also a Korok Mask that jiggles when you get near a hidden Korok, you know, in case you wanted to earn that gold piece of poo.
  • There are four new Breath of the Wild amiibo also on the way – one of each of the four champions. However, like most other amiibo, Nintendo has plans on only making like 9 of each figure and spreading them throughout the corners of the US so finding one will be impossible.
  • Super Mario Odyssey has players running around a more realistic world and when Mario flings his hat on things, he becomes that thing. For example, throw your hat on a T-Rex, become the T-Rex. I’ve never seen people more excited about playing as a rock or immobile tree before. In addition, it is coming this October. I can’t wait to control that traffic light to make rush hour commuters more stressed out.
  • Rocket League is coming to Switch with Mario themed cars and promises cross-platform play. But we will see if Sony wants to play nice with Nintendo.
  • There is a new Yoshi game in development. It doesn’t have an official name yet but has players running around a pop-up book, switching between the foreground and background. Looks to be a nice next step after Woolly World. No Poochy though.
  • Like Yoshi, there is also another Kirby game in development. Looks to be more like Return To Dreamland in the fact that four players can platform together.
  • Game Freak did announced that another Pokemon game is in development for Switch besides Pokken Tournament. Hopefully it is a real Pokemon game and not something dumb like Pokemon Trade Card Game 2. However, I wouldn’t mind a Pokemon Snap 2. Hell, I would even take a new Pokemon Pinball game.  Just please stop with the trading card nonsense.
  • Xenoblade Chronicles is a very Japanese looking RPG
  • Nintendo likes to tease as they released a title card trailer for Metroid Prime 4. No other details were given but it still isn’t the 2D Metroid we want (see next bulletpoint)
  • Metroid: Samus Returns is being developed by MercurySteam, the same team that messed up the Castlevania series with the Lord of Shadow games. This reimagining of Metroid II: Return of Samus looks like it is running on the Mirror of Fate engine and hopefully it won’t suck. There will also be a new Samus and Metroid amiibo two-pack sold in conjunction for this game as well. The Metroid amiibo is squishy! This game actually launched in September which isn’t too far away. Please don’t suck. Please don’t suck.
  • Nintendo also announced a ton of other amiibo including wedding themed Mario, Peach and Bowser for Mario Odyssey, a goomba and koopa troopa, and some new Fire Emblem amiibo. eBay scalpers are already drooling.
  • There was something about Splatoon 2
  • Nintendo has mentioned nothing about their online strategy for Switch nor did they comment on anything Virtual Console related. If they did launch a Virtual Console service on Switch, it would probably only have Clu Clu Land and Urban Champion anyway because sometimes Nintendo hates you.
  • Fire Emblem Warriors puts a focus on real time fighting instead of tactical turn based and is basically going to a Dynasty Warriors or Hyrule Warriors all over again
  • The SNES Mini was also not unveiled but the Virtual Boy Mini was… haha, no, just kidding. Again, Nintendo hates you.
  • Nothing Wii U was mentioned which means Nintendo wants this system to die
  • Nintendo is also betting big with ARMS on Switch
  • Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions also looks like the best Mario & Luigi game since Superstar Saga on GBA
